What you need to know before your trail

The canals of Stoke are normally a nice place for a wander but recently a man’s body has been found close to a canal towpath. When the police look in his pockets for ID, they find a magnetic letter E and wonder if this is a message from the killer. When a few days later, a second body is found, also with a magnetic letter (V this time) tucked in their clothes, police start to get very worried indeed.

Will there be more bodies? Will the letter spell a chilling message and what is the pattern behind these two horrific deaths? DS Allie Shenton and her colleagues are sent into full alert to catch the person responsible, to follow the leader..

Travel Guide

The area famous for its potteries and canals is being stalked by a serial killer. Who is he and why is he committing these crimes? The story starts by delving into his past and the early reveal of who he is, does not spoil the story which is essentially a why he did it and how. What was it about this man’s background and childhood which made him what he is today?

Stoke back in the 1980s was a different place to what it is now.  And for readers who grew up reciting the nursery rhyme Nick Nack Paddy Whack give the dog a bone, it will no doubt never be the same again….

This old man, he plays one

He plays knick knack on my thumb

With a knick knack paddy wack

Give a dog a bone

This old man comes rolling home

With its derogatory terms and meaning coupled with the childhood innocence of the song, these words – counting victims – together with the childish plastic letters found on the bodies, create a chilling and atmospheric thriller.
Flashbacks to the 1980s, to days of childhood, a picture forms of who this man is and who he has become. How life and society have made him what he is today.

Childish games turn deadly in Stoke.
