Sent to a boarding school at aged 11, but Jon Whitcroft has the taste for adventure!
Jon Whitcroft is sent to boarding school at aged 11 and he’s not expecting to enjoy it very much if at all. So when he comes across a pack of vengeful ghosts, he thinks his early impressions were probably right.
But then he meets quirky Ella who has a taste for adventure and for protecting themselves and their friends from these ghosts but that might mean summoning an ancient spirit from the past to help them….
Cornelia Funke explains that she got the idea for this story after visiting Salisbury Cathedral and taking a tour. It’s there she ‘met’ William Lonspee, the spirit in the story who Jon and Ella summon to help them.
Later on she also visited Salisbury Cathedral school as she knew her character was going to go there. It’s here that she learned about the island, and the painting of the chorister whose ghost is also in the book.
There are many ghostly tales in Salisbury and the author recommends that you take a tour. Here’s one we recommend although we’re not brave enough to go on it, but we have it on a good friend’s authority!
