2000s – A book apparently banned in the strict Saudi Kingdom but which was a success amongst the women there
The girls of Riyadh are just like girls living in any city in the world – they’re young, attractive and just want to enjoy life despite living by Saudi Arabia’s strict cultural traditions.
They love all the things about life that other girls of their age do and want to watch television and american television at that. They want to sneak away behind their parents backs and date who they like.
But can they be like other girls their age or are they destined to be Saudi girls?
First impressions of the setting and characters in this book ? Sex and the city moves to Riyadh. The girls who have written the series of emails which make up the book are a varied range of characters but the only problem is that despite their wealth and privilege, they live in Riyadh and all the problems and restrictions that that brings.
The Saudi women here know their restrictions or rather those placed upon them and are instead aprt at finding ways to avoid the traps. Trying to stay true to islamic beliefs and those of your parents whilst wanting to be like girls your own age in other countries must be very difficult indeed.
Sadeem, Gamrah, Michelle and Lamees guide us through their lives of restrictions and attempts at subverting them. Have you ever tried to date without being able to mingle with the opposite sex? Hold your phone up and hope they see your number.
Can’t even bump into someone at the shops – shopping centres have different areas for men and women.
A fascinating guide to dating and being young (although rich and pampered) in Riyadh.
