Not surprisingly, the landscape of Prince Edward Island set Lucy Maud Montgomery’s imagination on fire. She lived, worked and set her novels on the island, wrote its landscape, its charm into each and every page. Green Gables is as much in the hearts of people now as it was at the time the books were published.
This is the story of the island in times gone by, of the PEI that Anne would have walked around, on the far, on her way to see Gilbert Blythe, to the school house and back and to see Diana, her bosom buddy. These photographs show Anne’s island but also the island which Lucy Maud Montgomery took to her heart in many ways and who left a legacy which would enchant the world. This island is very proud of its literary heritage and these photos and Green Gables guide you around the places which inspired an author, who inspired the world.
Green Gables and PEI
You can’t mention Prince Edward Island without mentioning Green Gables and vice versa.
Green Gables was once the home of Montgomery’s relatives and is now furnished and decorated based on descriptions in her most famous novel. However if you’re read the novels, you’ll know for real that this house is really the house that Anne of Green Gables really did live in with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. Wander through the rooms and soak in the atmosphere in the novels. See the books on Anne’s shelves, her patchwork quilt on her bed. Maybe find the brooch on that shawl that she told Marilla she’d lost in the pond.
Nearby is the author’s childhood home–her grandparents’ farm–and at New London, her lovingly preserved birthplace.
At Park Corner, visitors can enjoy one of her favourite places–Silver Bush, the home of her Campbell cousins. Then there’s Avonlea village, a fictional town so created as a tourist attraction in real life, but still worth a visit, if you’re in the market for a garden rack or a dress with puffed sleeves.

This was probably one of the first books I read set in Canada. It was certainly one of the books that made me want to go there. I imagined Green Gables to be beautiful from the books and the television show I’d seen but I can still remember the moment I stepped inside Green Gables for real. It was quite literally like stepping inside a book for real. This had been my childhood dream and here I was!
It’s lovely to see the pride that the islanders have taken with making Anne their official guide to PEI. There’s everything from the books lovingly recreated, lakes renamed in honour of Anne and of course the writer herself Lucy Maud Montgomery. This is just the loveliest book ever and it’s such a nice one to have to complement the books. I’ve got a few copies of Anne of Green Gables now, one bought from PEI and it’s a treasure I’ll keep for ever. This one is going to sit right beside it on the shelf.
