1605: Just why do we light fires on November 5th?
In 1605 a group of men planned to kill the King by blowing up the Parliament whilst the king and his courtiers were inside.
The men who plotted the crime were all Catholics who felt betrayed by the King and who wanted greater freedom such as the right to pray and attend church. They wanted to put the King’s daughter Princess Elizabeth, on the throne as Catholic head of state
Guy Fawkes was one of the plotters and was in charge of the explosives.
The plot failed and we celebrate that the plan didn’t work by holding an annual Bonfire Night
