Follow the breadcrumbs into the forest if you dare!
Hansel and Gretel live with their father and their awful stepmother in the woods. they’re very poor and so one day the step mother plots to let the children wander in the woods and abandon them there so she and their father can live and not starve. The children overhear their plan and so take pebbles so they can leave a trail and find their way back. the same thing happens again but this timeHansel and Gretel only have slice of bread to use. When they try to find the trail home, it is gone.
Stumbling upon a house in the woods, the children knock at the door. This huge house is made out of gingerbread and they can’t believe their eyes! Their stomachs are rumbling. The woman who answers the door however lures them inside and plans to eat them both. When they realise she is trying to get them inside the oven, they shove her in instead. They find jewels in her home so before escaping they take them.
After a while, they find their way home, to find their step-mother dead and their father mourning them. They use the jewels to buy food and a new house.
The Black Forest is well known for being the inspiration behind many of the tales of the Brothers Grimm. The house Hansel and Gretel stumble upon in the forest is probably somewhere in the Black Forest and there are plenty of villages in and around the area where you can see similar looking houses to those in the book.
This is the town where the Brothers Grimm grew up and heard their first fairy stories. No wonder that the town is most associated with the stories the Brothers Grimm created. The half-timbered houses, fairytale figures and general atmosphere of the place will take you into the Grimm world.
