1900s : A history of Latinos in America
1900s : A history of Latinos in America
The first new edition in ten years of this important study of Latinos in U.S. history, Harvest of Empire spans five centuries-from the first New World colonies to the first decade of the new millennium. Latinos are now the largest minority group in the United States, and their impact on American popular culture-from food to entertainment to literature-is greater than ever. Featuring family portraits of real- life immigrant Latino pioneers, as well as accounts of the events and conditions that compelled them to leave their homelands, Harvest of Empire is required reading for anyone wishing to understand the history and legacy of this increasingly influential group.
The book then focuses on a few case studies to illustrate the roles various countries have had in the relationship with the USA and the USA’s view of those hispanic communities.
The book was written 18 years ago, but the themes are sadly perhaps even more relevant today. The borders and barriers then have been replaced by walls, families are separated not just by war but by US policy. The drug war and the battle to stop the scourge affecting both countries and many more worldwide is also a factor in this relationship.
This is an account, a study of the underdevelopment of some countries and the continuing exploitation of others and the immigration to the giant country in the North which is the result.
AS well as politics however, the strengths and positive developments of the spread of Latino culture and language in the US is nicely explained through how it has enriched America.
The Spanish flavour of the American pie is spicy, flavoursome and meaty.
