2000s: Book two in the Dave Robicheaux series
Dave Robicheaux is trying to put a life of violence and crime behind him, leaving homicide to run a boat-rental business in Louisiana’s bayou country. But one day while fishing in the Gulf with his wife Annie, he witnesses an event that will change his life forever.
A small two-engine plane suddenly crashes into the sea and Robicheaux dives down to the wreckage to find four bodies and one survivor; a little girl miraculously trapped in a pocket of air. When the authorities insist only three bodies were recovered from the plane, Robicheaux decides to investigate the mystery of the missing man.
Southwest Pass
I was just off Southwest Pass, between Pecan and Marsh islands, with the green, whitecapping water of the Gulf Stream to the south and the long flat, expanse of the Louisiana coastline behind me – which is really not a coastline at all but instead a huge wetlands area of saw grass, dead cypress strung with wisps of moss and a maze of canals and bayous that are choked with Japanese water lilies whose purple flowers audibly pop in the morning ad whose root systems can wind around your propeller shaft like cable wire.
New Iberia
Robicheaux and his wife live on a boat here and often travel down to Southwest Pass “with the green, whitecapping water of the Gulf Stream to the south and the long flat, expanse of the Louisiana coastline behind”
New Orleans
The city where he works comes to life in every way. From the famous Bourbon Street where the jazz bars are, to the donuts and coffee on Decatur Street to the police stations, this is a city which moves, dances, shoots and thrills.
