2000s: Could you find the entrance to the underworld?
When his son is killed by gangsters’ crossfire on his way to school, Neapolitan taxi driver Matteo is consumed with despair. An encounter with strangers in a café raises the possibility of bringing young Pippo back from the dead, if they can locate the entrance to the underworld . .
Naples is a dark and dangerous city in this book. It’s underworld is graphically described and evoked
The underworld is a world of violence and pain – where a father is forced to either bring back his son and find out what happened to him or to kill his murderer.
The underworld of the city is a dark and dangerous place – very Dantesque in its evocation and feel. There’s the spiral of the dead, the concept that souls try to return to the land of the living…The Bronze gates of the Naples underworld are tainted with many things.
Naples itself is drawn as a maze of streets but there are some very real places to visit – in particular the restaurant Matteo eats at every morning. It’s a floating one in the sea and the scenery is stunning. A good place to read this novel too!
