Tonight, 4th June 1978, will be the start of a new life for them. This night will indeed change Violet’s destiny, in the most unexpected of ways…
Manchester
The story starts in Manchester where the characters live and where the author does too. This provides a backdrop for life now as Tara lives and finds out about her mother’s secret. The only real location of note is the Amethyst Bar in the novel which was inspired by the Golden Garter club famous in its heyday.
The author discovered this on a cycling holiday and fell in love with it, knowing she would have to set a novel here some day. The town is called in the novel and the Hermitage of San Frutos is renamed the Monasterio Juanita but the feel and atmosphere of the place is very easy to identify. The Spanish mountains, the valleys, the winding roads and the sense of wonderment are all clearly evoked in the novel.
Author recommended place which inspired her further include the Duraton National Park with its elevation above the river and the deep canyon below.
What a wonderful place to discover secrets and history….
Talk about heartbreaking and heartrending! The writing here is full of compassion and empathy and draws you in from the start.
Recommended and very very atmospheric with the location really taking centre stage!
