After the puzzling death of a shopkeeper in rural Australia, troubled detective Dana Russo has just 12 hours to interrogate the prime suspect – a silent, inscrutable man found at the scene of the crime, who simply vanished 15 years earlier.
Where has he been? And just how dangerous is he? Without conclusive evidence linking him to the killing, Dana must race against time to persuade him to speak. But over a series of increasingly intense interviews, Dana is forced to confront her own past if she wants him to reveal the shocking truth.
Travel to remote Australia to Carlton and Earlville
The novel is set in Carlton and Earlville in Queensland but that’s as exact as it gets. The town where Jensen’s store is, is remote, small and in the middle of nowhere ( Well Carlton and Earlville) No one passes through here if they don’t know it exists. Everybody knows everybody here and people remember things from the past.
Families from the past bear grudges, people go out of their way to survive and there is a single police station not used to much crime of a serious nature. When someone goes missing, people remember. When that someone returns after 15 years, people know they are never going to forget.
“Earlville was considered the less prosperous of the’twin towns’. It had a sneering, factious relationship with Carlton; a kind of sibling rivilary between Orphans. Marooned in a region of forests, swamps and lakes, the two towns were merely background noise for city dwellers three hours away. Earlville thought Carlton was full of snobs and the wasting of public money; Carlton though Earville should give up its nostalgia for low-paid sweat jobs and join the modern world.”QueQueen
