At the heart of Gibraltar lies the Rock.
At the heart of the Rock lies darkness.
The late-morning sun beats down on the Rock of Gibraltar as bored tourists photograph the Barbary Apes. A child’s scream pierces the silence as she sees a monkey cradling a macabre trophy. A man’s severed arm.
In the narrow streets of the Old Town below, someone Spike Sanguinetti knows all to well is seriously hurt in a mysterious hit-and-run. Currently investigating his former lover in Genoa, he must quickly race back to get to the heart of this mystery, the heart of Gibraltar, the heart of darkness.
From the glitz and glamour not to mention the seafaring history of Genoa, Spike is still on a mission here but as he moves from one place to another, there is a lot to discover both for Spike and the reader in the history of the area. There is quite a nice potted history in the first few chapters which never get in the way of plot but add to the overall interest of why Spike is there and what he’s doing.
Back on home turf, the book opens with one of the most memorable ways of introducing a body, or in this case a body part in to the novel. You would not expect a arm in the grip of a monkey anywhere, least of all from the vantage point of Gibraltar rock.
