Early 1900s: Inspired by a true period in American history that totally captivates – Honeyville in Colorado is a town built on sin!
The town of Trinidad, Colorado was a tough place to be a woman in 1913. However if you were looking for a woman, then it was the perfect place – if you had enough money of course.
When Two women – Inez and Dora are thrown together following a murder, they have to stick together in a town built for men and ruled by men. From both sides of the tracks, their differences have to bond them from the outside world.
The town built on sin is not one to sit still for long however and the women might think they are surviving but the town has an undercurrent that is just waiting to whip up the dust on the roads outside and a whole lot of unrest.
This novel shines a historical and fascinating light on the 1914 miners’ strike in Colorado which lead to the so called Ludlow Massacre. This massacre saw the National Guard and workers from the local Fuel and Iron Company attacked a group of over 1000 miners who were striking at the time. Many were with their families at the time. Historic Trinidad is not to be missed.
What was this event like for the miners and indeed for their wives and other women in the area. Dora Whitworth, a prostitute, has more than a passing acquaintance with many of the men involved in the dispute and so gives a unique view of the situation unfolding. Prostitution was legal in Trinidad and only in Trinidad at the time. The red light area here flourished as you might expect
The town is therefor separated into rich and poor – those in the trade and those who despise it. Inez, is from the other side of town as it were, a lady of money and leisure. When these two women become friends, the city limits blur.
Dora and Inez represent the city of Trinidad, both sides of the track, both arguments in the miners strike and both view of its women.
Daisy Waugh mentions in her novel too that the town of 1914 Trinidad is still standing and largely to the extent it was but with a few more wooden boards and hoardings hiding its past.
This is a town with more than one story to tell…
