What you need to know before your trail

Iban Woman is the third in the Iban Dream series of standalone novels by Golda Mowe, the most prolific Iban writer in English of her generation and a descendant of the erstwhile headhunters of Borneo. In this her latest book, readers are once again immersed in Iban culture, learning the art of the weave, how to interpret omens in nature and how to hunt for animals … and human heads.

Twenty-year-old Ratai is proud and strong for she is the eldest child of Nuing, the Iban warrior who went to the invisible world and returned alive, and the granddaughter of Bujang Maias, the great headhunter who was raised by apes.

Travel Guide

Borneo and the Iban people

The Ibans  are a people of Borneo. Most of them live in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. They also live in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan in longhouses called rumah panjai.

Ibans were renowned for practicing headhunting and tribal/territorial  activities. They also have had a fearsome reputation as a strong and successful warring tribe in the past. The Iban language continues to thrive.

“Ratai thought with longing to the days when she was young, when she used to follow her father to the mouth  of the Rajang River, to a place where he traded jungle produce with Melanu seafarers.”

“These visits were her annual highlights. Ships towered like houses upon the water, and the bazaar was filled with trinkets and jars and strange fragrant food. One time she even saw Melanau men swinging from a huge swing”
