Precious Ramotswe, owner of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency has a few problems on her plate. Her workload has increased quite a lot and there are some strange things going on such an intruder at Zebra Drive and….a pumpkin!
Mma Makutsi also has problems of her own, namely a man that can’t dance. and as for Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, one of the apprentices runs off with a wealthy woman.
All of that pales into comparison with the arrival of an unexpected visitor.
All this unfolds against the sunlit background of Mma Ramotswe’s beloved homeland, Botswana–those acacia trees, the endless sky and the endless supply of soothing bush tea.
The sense and evocation of place once again is the star of the show in addition to the wonderful warm and colourful characters. The plot – several strands of cases weaving together are not the main focus here as its the ambience, chuckles, the human spirit and that soft lilt of the Botswana accent that charms the birds from the acacia trees, or should that be the Eucalyptus trees –
The cafe was a good place to be, for several reasons. Firstly, there was the view , that of a stand of eucalyptus trees with foliage of a comforting dark green which made a sound like the sea when the wind blew through he leaves.”
Land locked Botswana, far away from the red sands and the dry mountains of Namibia may not give Precious access to the sea as she would like but she imagines it and conjures it in her minds eye. Rather like a reader with this book does.
‘There was always someone to watch.” Never a truer word spoken
