1984: Inspired by true events during the Troubles in Northern Ireland
Sean Duffy is a Detective Inspector in Northern Ireland in 1984. A troublesome time in the on every level but when you are the only Catholic in your street and one of the few in the forces, it’s ever gong to be an easy ride. With problems of his own such as excessive drinking and a dislike of his superiors and of teh rules, he was demoted before being reinstated for this case.
In this case, he’s well aware of the spectacular escape of an IRA man Dermot McCann from Her Majesty’s Maze prison. And he knows that they will soon cross paths. What he didn’t bargain for however is for what will happen next and the locked room mystery that they will soon both find themselves in.
Can he outrun the most skilled terrorist the IRA ever created? And will the past catch him first?
The plot mixes high profile and sensitive political events with a crime thriller plot mixed in. There’s the high pressures of dealing with the IRA, being at the centre of the troubles, an environment which changes everyday. Real political figures with speaking parts – Margaret Thatcher for one makes an appearance and actually plays an important role here as do Gerry Adams, Ian Paisley and even JFK’s nephew Joe Kennedy.
The prison is now partly demolished but there are some remains and there were plans to transform it into a peace centre.
There is more than a ring of authenticity about the events and setting in the book given the real historical context. However it ‘s the finer details such as the appearance of the Crown pub in Belfast which adds an edge to the overall atmosphere and reality
The childhood links between Dermot and Sean – friends until Bloody Sunday – wrap up the case in realistic and chilling terms. The overshadowing threat of a bombing campaign and the city awaiting and preparing for it is full of threat, dark shadows, cold cases, dangerous streets, political divisions and feral kids. Irish Noir.
