2000s: The seventh visit to Sandhamn
The new summer house on Sandhamn Island is an architectural dream for its owner, Carsten Jonsson. It’s a nightmare for the locals. The venture capitalist has flouted local traditions, property lines, and the natural beauty of the coastline. He’s also too wealthy and arrogant to heed the anonymous warnings to leave. The threats escalate when his guest lodge is burned to the ground and an unidentifiable corpse is found in the charred ruins.
Detective Inspector Thomas Andreasson isn’t sure if it’s murder or a tragic accident. Until his friend attorney Nora Linde is drawn into the investigation. Nora’s emotional investment in Carsten’s fragile and fearful wife, Celia, is yielding a new level of suspicion: that the Jonssons are hiding more than anyone can imagine. Now Thomas and Nora must sift through the ashes of a puzzling crime and step into the shadows of a powerful family, whose deadly secrets are coming to light on Sandhamn.
Still waters do indeed run deep. Sandhamn is a small and usually peaceful holiday island in the Stockholm archipelago, not far from the city of Stockholm itself. But the island is a world in itself, a remote island in the sense that not many people live here – you can see how it would make a lovely home for an architect as in this novel. To live by the still waters, with a view of the water, in a large house with a balcony . However the venture capitalist has flouted local traditions, property lines, and the natural beauty of the coastline. You can understand why there would be anger about this!
Carsten throws a lavish party for the islanders, but it’s hardly an attempt to meet them and discuss their concerns. That very same night, their guesthouse burns to the ground. Not only is it found to be an act of arson, but things get even worse when a body is found in the ruins. Moreover, Carsten didn’t come home the night before, and so it’s quickly feared that the body in the guesthouse is his.
This is the story of islanders, an outsider, rich and poor and murder on a small island.
This is usually a place to rest and relax, to eat the fresh fish straight from the still waters, to take a boat ride, to escape the noise of the city.
