Íngrid Betancourt Pulecio is a Colombian politician, former senator and anti-corruption activist.
Betancourt was kidnapped by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on 23 February 2002 while campaigning for the Colombian presidency. Six years later, she was rescued by Colombian security forces 2 July 2008. There were 14 other hostages released (three United States citizens, and 11 Colombian policemen and soldiers).
Colombia
Most candidates for political office visited the former DMZ. When Betancourt announced her trip, the government apparently confirmed that a security escort would accompany her for at least part of her journey but that never happened. That was a cause for controversy years later. Instead of a plane and helicopter, she was forced to go by road and at one of the checkpoints, she was kidnapped.
She spent 6 years in the dark Colombian jungle not knowing if she would live to see another day.
