2000s: It’s a summer of new beginnings for Abi and Loretta – and one they will never forget.
Abi is distraught when her ex-husband Alex takes their twelve-year-old daughter, Chloe to spend the summer with his glamorous fiancée Marisa and her parents at their home on the beautiful Italian island of Procida. Persuaded by her best friend to book a holiday at the island’s Hotel Paradiso, Abi finally meets the woman she’s been avoiding for so long. Will the two women’s strained relationship survive the summer?
One-time teenage swimming sensation, Loretta, has run the Hotel Paradiso since leaving Capri broken-hearted. When childhood friend Salvo comes to stay, Loretta is forced to confront her past and the fears that have kept her away from the water for forty years. But just as she finds the courage to open her heart, she discovers all is not as it seems with Salvo…
There are islands – Ischia, Capri and Procida
Located just off the coast of Naples, Procida Island in Italy is a pastel-coloured gem. The island is known for its authenticity and local way of living. Ischia and Capri.
The love the author has for the island of Procida shines through loud and clear. The beaches, the streets, the food and everything in between. Oh and it was wonderful to see they seek out the beach – Pozzo Vecchio Beach – that was featured in The Postman – a mini booktrail of a film location!
There is a lovely day trip to the Amalfi Coast too. Ah to live the Italian dream.
What a wonderful place this island of Procida sounds! I was totally enamoured by it given the way the author paints it on the page. Wonderful streets, blue waters and colourful houses seem divine. Now, add a story about a broken marriage and a woman coming here to heal and you have the full package!
Abi is the woman in question and what makes it worse, her daughter wants to go on holiday to her ex-husband and wife’s home. Ah awkward. Well, Abi heads off herself and soon finds that there is some of her story still to unfold.
There’s a lot more to this novel than meets the eye – it’s well crafted, mixing several threads and POVs with ease. I was immersed in both the paradise and the underlying sadness within. A moving read with characters I felt very emotional about!
