1990s: Marshall Arts and more in this travelogue
Salzman captures post-cultural revolution China through his adventures as a young American English teacher in China and his shifu-tudi (master-student) relationship with China’s foremost martial arts teacher.
Salzman became fascinated with the Chinese language and culture, after watching the television series “Kung Fu”,when he was just thirteen.
In the early 80s, he moved to Changsha, China, teaching English to students and teachers at Hunan Medical College.
The area of China Salzman lived in is still not often visited by Westerners and so is a unique place to visits in a book in this way. During the 1980s, there weren’t many Chinese themselves who traveled beyond their own villages, and so when a foreigner came into their world, he was somewhat of a novelty. A culture shock and an education for them all.
