St Lucia to London
The author writes at the start of the book that this story was inspired by her own family’s experience. Her parents arrived in Britain from the island of St Lucia in the mid 1050s and settled in West London. She grew up surrounded by a vibrant Caribbean community with music as her backdrop – she is the Pepsi of Pepsi and Shirlie fame!!
She now lives in St Lucia with her husband, her family’s birth. There are lots of examples of the local language throughout the book. St Lucia is a melting pot of French with some African dialect thrown into the mix. There is a nice list of some KWEYOL at the end of the book to help you feel the culture and emotions in the story.
