On top of the Eiffel Tower, Michael surprises his girlfriend Kathy by kneeling down on one knee and proposing marriage. Everyone is thrilled for the couple who seem meant for each other.
Leila on the other hand is Kathy’s best friend who is not quite so lucky – her husband having left her for someone younger. She is so pleased for Kathy but cant help wishing that something so magical would happen to her. But then things get worse when she is called home due to a family accident.
The list of characters grows when the happy couple return to Bridgeport in Ireland – there’s Vonnie, the wedding cake maker; Birdie, the mother of the bride and Grace, mother of the groom.
When marriage brings families together it also brings secrets and hidden heartbreak to the surface.
Of course the opening scene is practically one of the most romantic ever and can only happen in the city of love, Paris.
The cover sets the scene well and the love affair we are brought into and that special moment of a proposal brings the city of love to all of its sparking and romantic life. but the romance and sugary nature of the story starts and ends there for when they return to Bridgeport in Ireland, the icing on the cake so to speak starts to melt to reveal what is underneath.
Ireland brings the characters and the story from Paris and sets it in reality showing the aftermath of a proposal, preparations for the wedding and the many emotions of those involved. It started with Paris is the ideal title as it is what happens next that really changes the lives of those involved.
