What you need to know before your trail

Aah the beautiful Isle of Mull, a tranquil place and the least likely spot to find a dead body in the water. Detective Superintendent Lorimer was hoping that his holiday was going to be a tranquil one, far away from the mean streets of Glasgow. But the body of a red-haired young man washed up on the shore puts paid to that. The body has been bound with twine in a ghoulishly unnatural position but that’s not the worst of it – it sends a shiver down Lorimer’s spine as it strongly reminds him of a twenty year old murder which he failed to solve and which haunts him still.

Local cop DI Stevie Crozier takes charge of the island murder investigation, but Lorimer can’t help noticing the similarities and following close behind.

Could be a serial killer on the loose after all these years? Has someone got away with murder for decades?

Travel Guide

The Isle of Mull

This island is just so stunningly and peaceful that it really gives you the shivers to read of such criminal goings on  here. But then crime can also haunt paradise which it does with a vengence here and seemingly some sort of grudge that may have lasted 20 years or more.

Alex Gray knows and loves Mull and after having drawn such a vivid picture of the  mean streets of Glasgow, here she is with the lovely island of Mull, the famous town of Tobermory and the many coves and remote houses dotted around the island. Police work and their methods are different here, confusing and perhaps slow to a cop from the mainland. But the people here live a different life, they are islanders, in a community with tradition and a suspicion of an outsider…of the police force at least. So a murder, with possible links to a Glasgow case is not going to be easy to solve with two police forces so far apart in more ways than one.

“Nowhere was more special than their safe haven in Mull. It was a place that ought to have remained free from all the evil and darkness that dogged his footsteps in the city, But nowhere was sancrosanct; wherever people lived, loved or vented their hate gave rise to the possibility of terrible deeds, Not even the calm, slow pace of life on that island could keep the midnight out”

Of course, the landscape of Mull is slightly altered in the novel as Kilbeg Country house hotel is fictional for obvious reasons as are the Black Teeth or any other loch close to the Sound of Mull. The Sound and Tobermory bay are very real however and really need a visit soon.
