The Cuban Revoution has shaped men and women alike. It has changed everyone who has experienced it and lived it. But for two men, the stakes and consequences are even higher.
One of them is an exile of the REvoltion living in Miami and the other, a leader still in the homeland. For Goyo Herrera who is now in his 80s and living in Miami, his life in exile has been good but he has never forgotten about his homeland or the man who stays there and represents the Cuba that could have been – El Comandante. Now, before it’s too late, Goyo wants, no needs, revenge.
Which old man, which reminder of the Cuban Revolution will prevail? This is the story of Cuba seen from both sides.
Cuba is known for having two faces – the one Cuban people dream of and the one which really exists. This novel captures them both by having two men sit on opposite sides of the Straits of Florida which separates Cuba from mainland America and the American Dream floats so close to the Cuban nightmare.
El Comandante is of course a thinly veiled version of Castro – and now Castro is an aging tyrant, who is intent on preserving Cuba’s revolutionary heritage.
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008. Politically a Marxist–Leninist and Cuban nationalist, he also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1961 until 2011.
The Museum of the Revolution and the Revolution Plaza in Cuba are two places you should visit to soak up the history of Havana.
