2000s: You love your family. You trust them. You shouldn’t.
When 17-year-old Eva Olsen awakes after a horrific accident that has left her bedbound, her parents are right by her side. Devoted, they watch over her night and day in the attic room of their family home in the forests of Norway.
But the accident has left Eva without her most recent memories, and not everything is as it seems. As secrets from the night of the accident begin to surface, Eva realises – she has to escape her parents’ house and discover the truth. But what if someone doesn’t want her to find it?
The novel is set in a remote valley town in the heart of Norway’s ancient fjords. It’s called Valden town in the novel but this is fictional and just as well.
The landscape is so rich and interestingly drawn: from the woods around the cabin where most of the actino takes place and beyond. There is a sense of claustrophobia throughout, a realisation that you can’t escape that house and even if you did, something outside would get you. And who is that stranger at the door? In the shadows?
The fictional village and house is said to be close to the Grønfossen waterfall. Such gorgeous scenery and the landscape is stunning! You can imagine it’s lovely living here but imagine this being your prison too? Beauty and isolation in one setting….
