In a feverish Paris still reeling from the Revolutionary Days of July, a young inspector from the Morals department is moved to the office of Occult Affairs.
Something dark is happening in the city. Something that the police have not seen before. With advancements in science and culture, there is a new breed of criminal and the crimes that are being committed need a specialist police unit.
So, this lonely policeman, obsessed with tracking down an elusive criminal must find a man who he only knows the nickname of – the Vicar.

This is the city of lights but also of darkness.It has just emerged from the dark days of revolution but the city is on edge. The King and those in government are having to find new ways to rule. The police, with the changing nature of crime, are coming across crimes they have not seen before. So, the Office of the Occult is born.
The city is evoked in exciting gothic style. The author is a master of rainy streets, cobbled alleyways and the sniff of revolution present in the air. This is a city like the Paris we saw in The Da Vinci Code and there is a series of clues to be solved.
Eric Fouassier did a doctorate in pharmacy and another in law, before specialising in the history of medicine, which he teaches at the university. Passionate about riddles and secret codes, he wraps them up in historical novels like this one.
