Travel Guide

From Glasgow to the Black Forest

Glasgow

The city where the drama begins. There are various sides to the city evoked  such as the city hall and the police station. Stories of missing people melt into the central story which sees the police head to West Linton and Kirkcowan. The drive around Scotland gives a bigger picture of the police work and the personal side to Grace’s story.

Germany and the Black Forest

Quite different to Glasgow! Anice contrast of locations. This is where things get very dark however and some of the novel is based on dark, true facts. There was a true scandal surrounding Helmut Kentler who was a German psychologist, sexologist and a professor of social education at the University of Hannover. With the financial support of the Berlin Senate, he is said to have placed neglected youngsters as foster children in the homes of single pedophile fathers and said that this was the best way to resocialize them. As part of the ‘Kentler Project’ he is said to have encouraged sexual contact between the fathers and their foster children. There is little written about the scandal despite the enormity of it.

Booktrailer Review

This is a dark one. Second part of a trilogy which did hamper my enjoyment of the whole affair but didn’t spoil it. There’s a nice little intro to the previous book at the start which helps.

The scandal of a pedo ring takes us from Glasgow to the Black Forest. Turns out the novel was inspired by the true story behind ‘The Pied Piper’ who was said to have lured children out of one place and took them to another. Is this where the fairytale ends for ever – in a French crime fiction novel?

There’s more I want to say but I will have to read the other two before getting a true picture of the novel but this was a thrilling read, a dark and disturbing one but very fast paced and great to see Glasgow and Germany in the hands of a French writer.
