2000s: A hostile wilderness is watching you.
2000s: A hostile wilderness is watching you.
Ten years after a boy and his father went missing in the wilderness of Minnesota’s Boundary Waters, the boy – who is no longer a boy – walks back out of the forest. He is violent and uncommunicative. The authorities take him to Congdon Mental Institution in Duluth, on the edge of mighty Lake Superior.
There, language therapist Maya Stark is given the task of making a connection with this boy/man who came back from the dead. But their celebrity patient tries to escape and refuses to answer any questions about his father or the last ten years of his life.
If this area is not painted and evoked with style in the novel, then we don’t know what is! Josiah Blackthorn took his 9 year old son, Lucas, and disappeared into Boundary Waters. It’s when his son, many years later is put inside a Congdon Psychiatric Facility for a violent robbery, which he then refuses to talk about, then the real wilderness starts…
“The lakes squiggled over the page, pouring into each other in rapids and waterfalls, creating endless waterways dotted with islands and hugged by fat peninsulas. The land was a sea of pine, fir, and spruce towering over the water…’
“In 1902, a young crew set out on Lake Superior in the SS Bannockburn with 85,000 bushels of wheat in her hold. They didn’t konw the gales were coming or maybe they did, but they didn’t know enough to be afraid.
The entire city of Duluth, Minnesota, clung to the side of an ancient basalt ridge, fighting the slope toward the water, and you knew you were getting close to my neighbourhood when the pavement started buckling like waves on a high wind. Paint peeled off crooked porches where old couches and lawn chairs faced the giant warehouses lining the docks. Lincoln Park was a hop, skip and a world away from Canal Park, where tourists snapped pictures of the Life Bridge, took their sightseeing cruises, and ate their fennel and watermelon salads.
