1990s onwards: A city of hope and dreams…for some
Moroccan author Tahar Ben Jelloun writes about the experience of those who either want to or are forced to leave their homes. Often they are given promises, false ones at that, of a new future. They hold on to those promises and carry them with them over deserts, oceans as they try to head towards a new beginning.
Azel is a well educated man who is invited to spend his life as the companion of a wealthy gay Spaniard as others too follow their hopes of romance. Others follow dreams of freedom and choice whilst others turn over to the dark side of humanity..
In Tangier, in the winter the Cafe Hafa becomes an observatory for dreams and their aftermath. Cats from the cemetery, the terraces, and the endif communal bread oven of the Marshan district gather round the cafe as if to watch the play unfolding there in silence, and fooling nobody. Long pipes of kif pass from table to table whilst glasses of mint tea grow cold
The latter part of the book is set in Barcelona and this becomes a city of many suprises
