Chicago, 1944. Liz Stephens has little interest in attending a USO club dance with her friends Betty and Julia. She’s all set to marry her childhood sweetheart but as soon as she lays eyes on Morgan McClain all bets are off. She dances with him but leaves to go to the ladies room. On her return she sees something she wishes she hadn’t. Morgan is dancing with her friend Betty, apparently smitten.
Betty later asks Liz if she will help her write a letter to the nice man she met at the dance – she doesn’t know about Liz’s feelings. Liz reluctantly agrees, keen to contact this man again.
But the letters continue and so too does Liz’s lie and duplicity…
Chicago and illinois during the war years are awash with dances and society ladies wishing their boys will return home one day. war is declared and the men are heading off into the unknown. At the dance, where soldiers meet girls, both parties know that this might be the first and last time they dance together.
The horror and extreme situation that both men and women would have found themselves in are illustrated here with memories and scars of war. From the music, to the teacups and the soldier uniforms to the horrors of war, this is a story of atmosphere, love, regret, missed opportunities and how war can change so many things, so far away from the battle field.
At the first mention of the song ‘ Don’t sit under the apple tree’ you will be making a playlist to read this book too. Very evocative of place and setting.
