2000s: The city of Southampton is on fire..
In the dead of night, three raging fires light up the city skies. It’s more than a tragic coincidence. For DI Helen Grace the flames announce the arrival of an evil she has never encountered before.
Because this is no firestarter seeking sick thrills, but something more chilling: a series of careful, calculating acts of murder.
But why were the victims chosen? What’s driving the killer? And who will be next?
A powder keg of fear, suspicion and dread has been laid. Now all it needs is a spark to set it off . . .
“Detective Helen Grace has never seen such destruction. Six fires in twenty-four hours. Two people dead. Several more injured. It’s as if someone wants to burn the city to the ground..”
It’s an interesting way to see a city that’s for sure. Through the eyes of firemen and the victims as we race around the streets of Southampton to yet another fire. Someone is hell-bent on burning the entire city to the ground, and it’s a ride in a fire engine most of the time, or the back of a police car as we discover who and see the burning city at the same time.
The pace is fast, the tension high and the temperature even higher. The fire, the urgency of the situation really brings home the work of the police, fire and ambulance services, the problems of racing round a burning city and the fear of the community.
