2011: Libby Slater is retuning to her hometown of Lighthouse Bay to get over the death of her lover. He has left her a house in the area and so she hopes to stay there and mend the broken relationship with her sister – for something that happened years ago breaking them apart
The fictional Queensland coastal town of Lighthouse Bay is a setting for intrigue and family secrets across the years.
Isabella Winterbourne’s journey to the Bay almost never happens when the ship she is on sinks and she almost drowns. A wooden chest full of treasured possessions.
The journey on the ship is evoked with every choppy wave and the swell of the water making Isabelle feel sick and tired. The journey is long and arduous and their destination is remote and will not be reached for weeks. The conditions of life on such a ship for isabella are harsh and very basic.
The same light of that lighthouse bay draws Libby back all those years later. It’s as if the lighthouse acts as a watchtower for these two women across the decades bringing them home or to a place of salvation. It watches as their lives and those of the people living beside the bay play out and it watches and protects the treasure which is washed up on its shores.
The writing flows like the waves in the bay throwing up choppy and unsettling themes of lost love, conflict and family secrets but with a warm ripple of love running through it.
