What you need to know before your trail

Carlos Bluhm lives in upper-class Lima and his life is not to be sniffed at. A whirl of social parties, drinking and the finer things in life. One day however he meets Maria Fernandez, a dancer at a tango bar in a rough part of town and he becomes entranced by her.  She represents everything he hasn’t got at home – something outside of his safe, cosseted white world. However she is only fifteen.

She will bring about in him a change which will destroy everything he has ever known.

Twenty years later and what has become of him? What happened to his wife and more importantly what happens to them now?

Travel Guide

Greek tragedy between a white German Peruvian man and an dark skinned girl. Class and racial divides cut across the city of Lima.

On one side is the rich white safe and cosseted environment which Bluhm lives in. His escape to the rough and ready area where he meets Maria is ot of his world. She is dark skinned, exotic and lives in a world of poverty and neglect.

The club smells of smoke and tango – and a man’s view  – the word of the use Chola leaves a lot to be desired.

“The cigars were stale. The sign over the door read Noches Limenas – Lima Nights. but the women were reasonably good looking, the only exception a toothy mestiza with orange hair”

The various neighbourhoods

The various neighbourhoods and areas of the city are vividly drawn – of Bluhm’s house itself

The house was still grand. No one could deny it. Nestled between the golf club and the ancient pyramids, it sat at the very heart of San Isidrio – in a neighbourhood whose shops sported French names

whereas –  “The beggars who stumbled in now and then from the heartbreaking dunghills of Lima”

This is Peru  – rich and poor, young and old, and a love affair of sorts set against a backdrop of violence
