Detective Garda Cathy Connolly’s life has not panned out as she expected it to. She’s pregnant and it didn’t plan to be so she now wonders how she’s going to balance her demanding job with a new mouth to feed
Her first case after her shock news isn’t going to help matters. She’s called to what seems like a routine break-in, Cathy discovers the bones of a baby concealed in the hem of an old wedding dress. When the dress’s original owner, Lavinia Grant, is found dead in a Dublin suburb, Cathy is drawn deep into a complex web of secrets and lies spun by three generations of women.
Meanwhile, a fugitive killer has already left two dead in execution style killings across the Atlantic – and now he’s in Dublin with old scores to settle.
This case is about to become more personal for Cathy herself . .
The story is firmly cemented in Ireland and the city of Dublin althought here are chapters and mentions of developments in London and Las Vegas
It’s the Irish setting which shines for the subject matter a the macabre dinfins are firmly routed in Irish culture and history. In paticular the Garda career of one fiesty kick boxing agent
The setting is not the only insight into the novel as Ireland’s strict stance on abortion and unmarried mothers is a major theme in the novel with Cat’s dilemna taking centre stage. The demanding work of the Garda is also very real and very well evoked in the story.
“It’s years sine I was in Dublin too. there’s the HA’penny Bridge, and the custom house, and Trinity College. Lots to do”
Dún Laoghaire is a suburban seaside town in County Dublin, Ireland, about 12 km south of Dublin city centre. “ I always though it was so exciting, all those people going over to England and people coming home. Romantic, girls waiting for their chaps by the pier. So romantic.
Just ‘down the road’ from Dun Laoghaire – this is the small suburb where Lavinia lives and where her stores are well known.

What a meaty, thrilling thriller! The blurb drags you in with the discovery of those baby bones in the hem of a wedding dress but this novel delivers on so many more levels than just a cracking premise
Cathy ‘Cat’ Connelly, a 24 year old, kick boxing, Irish detective is a great lead character with a very interesting back story. She’s pregnant and her decisions and choices available to her reveal the problems for women across Ireland and so present a very interesting cultural link and backstory to the whole affair.
The main story involving the baby’s bones in the wedding dress takes on a whole new meaning then and this opens up a whole set of issues and themes. Factor in an American fugitive now in Dublin and there’s a multilayered gripping and very emotional read which follows. It’s not just the wedding dress that’s been in the closet for years gathering secrets and dust…
The story unraveled nicely with several characters adding a different part of the picture, new shades and new colours so by the time you finish it and stand back, it’s quite the Dublin tapestry.
Never has the phrase what a tangled web we weave seemed so apt.
