The residents are a close-knit community and this estate is like taking a bite out of the working class of the North East which Quigley paints so well. The estate is fictional and once you spend time there, fascinating though it is, you will be glad.
There are relationships, poisonous and unusual, smuggling of alcohol and cigarettes from over the water, murder and mystery all wrapped into one. The booze cruise as they used to be called is one of the comedic highlights as it reminds of days gone by where people used to cross the channel for their fix.
The book also showcases well the Geordie accents and the unique vernacular of both Sunderland and Houghton le Spring. Now then pet, enjoy this novel and indulge yourself in Northern Grit.
Seven Sisters
There is an area just outside on the outskirts of Houghton le Spring known as Copt Hill and the Seven Sisters and this is where the suicide is thought to have taken place.
