What you need to know before your trail

The Varela brothers may be very different nowadays but they will be forever linked by an event which happened back in their native Belize many years ago

Leo now works in a psychiatric ward whilst his brother Patrick is commissioner for Miami-Dade County. Leo is laid back and enjoys smoking and poetry whilst Patrick is career driven and very aggressive at at times.

But then a childhood friend comes on the scene asking for a favour…

Travel Guide

Can you ever run away from your past? Running from Belize to Florida in this case where the Varela brothers have made some sort of life for themselves despite their painful past.

Their struggles back in Belize involve their father and his illegal businesses and the grief and corruption that that all brought, not to mention the danger.

That night is the black cloud which hangs over their Florida life now –

“The past was like a bruise on his brain.”

The bruises from their time in Belize are large. Told in flashbacks, the painful memories of their childhood and growing up in Belize, with their father, a dubious used car salesman amongst other things, the brothers are now trying to make a life for themselves in Florida

They’ve drifted apart but their Belize past ricochets them back together. The nightmare of what happened then is chillingly brought back their minds one night as Leo is working in the unit and he’s asked to release one of his patients. That dark night, that chilling night when the past comes back to haunt them –

What did happen all those years ago at Lonesome Point in Belize? Demons can travel across the sea from Belize to Florida too…

Interestingly, Ian Vasquez is himself a Belize native and former psychiatric ward worker and now works for the St. Petersburg Times in Florida.
