2000s: One young survivor from a house of slaughter.Lucky or suspicious?
Detective DD Warren and Flora Dane are in a race against time to save a young girl’s life – or bring her to justice.
A family home has become a crime scene. Five people are involved: four of them have been savagely murdered; one – a sixteen-year-old girl – is missing.
Was she lucky to have escaped? Or is her absence evidence of something sinister?
Detective D. D. Warren is on the case, as is survivor-turned-avenger Flora Dane.
Seeking different types of justice, they must make sense of the clues left behind by a young woman who, as victim or suspect, is silently pleading, Look for me.
Perfect fall day in Boston when the book opens, but that doesn’t last long in Lisa Gardener’s Boston does it? She lives in Brighton, the are of he city once known as the Little Cambridge of Brighton. There are rows of tightly packed houses and densely populated windy streets which, when driving, require a gratuitous use of the horn and flashing lights.
This is the city of DD and the team. Where a mass murder wipes out a family in one evening:
“Do screams have a taste? Fire? ash? Red hot cinnamon candies which as a little girl Sarah liked to let melt on the tip of her tongue.
This book is centered in Boston, and its mean streets with a focus on the foster care system, and those who work in it and those who find themselves at its mercy. Foster homes it would seem aren’t always the answer”

This might be book 9 in the DD Warren series but not having read all the others, and those I have read, in the ‘wrong’ order, I can’t say that I felt I missed out. There is of course back story which may have made some things more obvious later on, but it didn’t spoil my read!
The issues in this book go far beyond your usual themes in thrillers and this for me made it gain a new emotional if not painful layer to the whole read. Lisa Gardener knows how to stab the reader in the heart and then pull the knife out that’s for sure! Some parts are very sad and grim but then again sadly not unrealistic!
A whole family is murdered and the young survivor is questioned. And that’s not the messy part! That’s just the beginning.
Boston is the backdrop rather than the star of the show but it’s a city with grit and attitude if DD Warren is your guide!
