2007: A three year old girl goes missing on holiday in Portugal
The 2007 disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann from her bed in Portugal touched millions around the world and has aroused sometimes dark controversy. The years pass, but this most emotive of cases still makes headlines worldwide.
Award-winning authors Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan have written the first reliable, independent account – drawing on in-depth interviews and rigorous analysis of both the Portuguese and British police investigations.
Are we closer now to the truth about Madeleine’s disappearance? Was the child abducted, or did something else happen?
A senior officer on the continuing British police probe told the authors after the first edition of this book was published: ‘The case is solvable’.
A small sleepy town in the Algarve popular with tourists.
Madeleine McCann , aged 3 at the time, disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment. She has still not been found.
She had been left with her siblings – two year old twins – asleep in their ground-floor apartment whilst the parents joined their friends, also parents with kids in the neighbouring apartments. They told police later that they checked on their children every 30 minutes. When Kate went at 10pm, she noticed Madeline had gone.
The restaurant was on the holiday complex some 55 metres away but it was not an enclosed site and members of the public could access the apartments easily. The police were called and the investigation began. The parents and the investigation have both been criticized.
No trace of Madeline was ever found.
