2000s: A killer is stalking the Northumberland moors…
A woman’s body has been found on the moors of Northumberland, brutally murdered and dismembered. Northumbria police enlist the help of unconventional psychologist Jon Atherton, a decision complicated by his personal history with lead investigator Detective Sergeant Kate Prejean.
As Christmas approaches and pressure mounts on the force, Prejean and Atherton’s personal lives begin to unravel as they find themselves the focus of media attention, and that of the killer known only as Son Of Geb.
Many of the locations in the novel are vague or fictional. Never mind though, the names might be new, but the places and the sense of the North East and Northumberland comes through loud and clear.
Northumberland is captured via its parks and vast landscape. “Bottleburn” is said to be in the shadows of the very real Cheviot Hills. Crime always seems more upsetting when in a stunning location somehow.
The frightening yet exciting thing about this novel? Rippon has taken the psychologist’s perspective and we see everything through his eyes. And what a sight he sees. Several sights. Not all of them nice, but ultimately fascinating. Brutal and unusual killings scattered over the countryside…
