Deep in the majestic kasbahs of the high atlas mountains their methods of control and power are as brutal as they are aggressive. Yet on the other hand they basked in the opulence and flamboyancy afforded them.
Thami liked mounting the heads of his enemies on the gates in the city but admirers of the French colonial approach as well as the opulence of Indian princes, their approach is at once mixed and devastatingly effective.
But when the French colonial leaders leave Morocco, the regime falls like a pack of cards.
Since Morocco has only been an independent country since 1956, this account of its history before the regime fell is both fascinating and captivating in equal measure.
