2000s: The Black Widow comes to Brighton
An ugly duckling as a child, Jodie Bentley had two dreams in life – to be beautiful and rich. She’s achieved the first, with a little help from a plastic surgeon, and now she’s working hard on the second. Her philosophy on money is simple: you can either earn it or marry it. Marrying is easy, it’s getting rid of the husband afterwards that’s harder, that takes real skill. But hey, practice makes perfect . . .
Detective Superintendent Roy Grace’s previous case is still giving him sleepless nights, there have been major developments with his missing wife Sandy, and an old adversary is back. But worse than all of this, he now believes a Black Widow is operating in his city. One with a venomous mind . . . and venomous skills. Soon Grace comes to the frightening realization that he may have underestimated just how dangerous this lady is.
Have lunch at English’s Seafood restaurant where Roy and Cleo love! Eat there for real and really tuck into the book and its characters!
Crisp a murderer, and also an experienced potholer has experience of Brighton’s underworld AND underground network. Imagine seeing the city through his eyes! That is quite the way to get underneath the skin of a city and really see its underbelly! (Maybe not best to go here just before a visit to the above restaurant)
Roy Grace’sBrighton seems to be changing – The High Tech Crime Unit is going north of Brighton to Haywards Heath and the Major Crime Team is is being moved to the Sussex Police HQ in Lewes. Roy Grace has a place in Hensham – but the taste of those fish and chips and the various dubious characters in Brighton always bring him back.
