2000s: A modern day Silence of The Lambs
Troubled San Francisco homicide detective Valerie Hart is planning a rare weekend away from the job when she gets the call. A body has been found. A woman, brutally murdered. And the cryptic note left by the body is addressed to Valerie.
The victim is unknown to her, but as Valerie analyses the scene, the clues begin to point in a deeply disturbing direction: to a maximum security prison where a woman called Katherine Glass is awaiting execution for a series of gruesome killings. And Valerie was the cop who put her there.
When a second body is found, Valierie realises that she is going to, once again, have to enter Katherine Glass’s twisted world for this serial killer may just hold the key to the killings.
But when a killer holds the cards, you’d better be sure that you have a pretty good hand yourself.

This is the book that I’ve read that most reminded me of the ghoulish horror and thrill I felt on reading The Silence of the Lambs. Yes, I’ve read serial killer thrillers before but this was like going back to the gory glory days where you really felt the evil on each and every page and the serial killer was the centre of their own twisted universe.
At the very centre of this is the story and relationship between the police woman Valerie and the creepy and utterly evil Katherine Glass who is in prison. These scenes were akin to Anthony Hopkins facing Clarice through that glass. Chilling stuff. Not for the faint hearted mind!Katherine is at the centre of this gory unravelling of events. Who is on the outside committing these crimes, what does she know etc etc? She casts a spell on both Valerie and the reader. When she appears, you stop and stare. Then the book moves on and it’s as if you’re still looking over your shoulder at chapters past.
It’s a stop and start thriller to really get you hungry for more. And the stop and start pattern to the plot really gives it that kick. You have whip lash by the end of it all.
Not for the squeamish mind. Oh no.
