Marija Vukic, a beautiful young filmmaker and celebrity, and a German officer are brutally murdered. Military intelligence officer Captain Gregor Reinhardt is assigned to the case.
Reinhardt is severely haunted by his wartime past, and he’s horrified to find out that his investigation may be more than just a murder and that the late Yugoslav heroine may have been more treacherous than anyone knew.
Through a minefield of political, military, and personal agendas, a trail of dead bodies leads Reinhardt to a secret hidden within the ranks of the powerful – a secret they will do anything to keep.

Luke McCallin has worked with the United Nations as a humanitarian relief worker and peacekeeper in the Caucasus, the Sahel, and the Balkans. His experiences have driven his writing, in which he explores what happens to normal people when they are put under abnormal pressures.
There is a lot of historical detail and sense of place in this novel, but never does it interfere with the plot:

The Latin Bridge is of course Ottoman-era stone bridge near the site of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s 1914 assassination
The spa resort of Ilidza
Claussen turned left at the crossroads in front of the Hotel Igman, another of the Austrian’s neo-Moorish constructions, and continued south. Past the twin Austria and Hungary hotels…
Just after the hotels, Claussen turned on to the beginning of the long alley that led up top the source of the Bosna River
They arrive at a house built in the style of the Austrian Imperial Castle…
A good place to visit to see the themes and setting of the novel is the Sarajevo Tunnel Museum
