Why a Booktrail?
1956 – 1958: The true story of Scotland’s infamous serial killer
1956 – 1958: The true story of Scotland’s infamous serial killer
Of course given the nature of this book and the fact the crimes are relatively recent the book is not intended as a booktrail but as a way of seeing the crimes and the horrors which were inflicted on the people of Glasgow over the spate of two years. It was recently the subject of an ITV drama In Plain Sight starring Dougie Henshall.
“The public were in a panic. In the phrase of the time, the killer had achieved what only Hitler had previously done and caused families to `evacuate’ their children, particularly their daughters, from Lanarkshire and Glasgow to relatives elsewhere. Scout packs and vigilante groups patrolled the streets and offered escorts to women at night, and women who lived alone armed themselves with knives, sat by the phone and imagined that the slightest sound after dark signalled their final moments. Security equipment sales broke all previous records.”
