Why a Booktrail?
A classic of Colombian literature and a must read for any Spanish language lover
A classic of Colombian literature and a must read for any Spanish language lover
María and her cousin Efraín fall in love before Efraín leaves for Bogotá. Not the right time for sure, but the rest of the novel follows their journey together and apart and their love and loss come back to haunt them.
Said to be one of the the most if not THE MOST romantic novel of Latin America.
The book is set in the region of Valle del Cauca which is near to the city of Cali. You can actually visit the Hacienda El Paraíso which was the setting for the novel and where the lovers lived. It’s now a museum and is definitely worth a visit.
There are literally pages of description of Colombia which is good for booktrailing purposes and you certainly are taken right into the heart of the country. As well as the landscape, the depiction of the country’s people, and their feelings makes up the rest of this love story – when love was rather a formal “procedure” rather than a free flowing feeling. Other issues such as slavery are touched upon but showing up the kindness of the people involved on the slaves made for a nice change.
Yet it’s the setting of the haciendas in the Valle Del Cauca region – of the flowers, the landscape and the hint of possibility that makes it so nice.
From the Pro Columbia official tourist website which has a full booktrail of this attraction.
