Timeless : Let’s go visit a traditional village market in Ireland
Author Eve Bunting wrote this story of a young girl and her friend enjoying going to a traditional village market in Ireland based and inspired by her own memories of growing up in the country.
Tess takes a friend called Wee Boy ( so called as he appears to have stopped growing) and they spend the day together in this very strange and magical place. An Irish market is a market like no other!
Tess and Wee Boy spend time in the market and what a colourful and wonderful world it is! They enjoy seeing all the various farm animals, the sword-swallower who entertains the crowds and the sea of people who swarm around the stalls like bees to honey.
There’s pipe music too somewhere and the noises and smells of the farm are exciting and fresh to Tess and her little friends.
There’s even a fortune teller (who mum advises against as they only tell you what you want to hear she says). Nevertheless, Tess takes Wee Boy and it cheers him up. This is what people do at the country fair – listen to music and get their fortunes told!
Tess and Wee Boy spend a lovely day together immersed in the sights, sounds and aromas of an Irish country fair. The flavour of the market is evoked in every detail and you’ll be pining to go yourself by the end.
Tess and Wee boy plan their next trip for the following year. See you then!
Maghera – The author herself was born here so we’ve picked this as a place of inspiration!
