You can’t go to San Francisco without seeing the cable cars and riding on them, even if some are scary as they run down the very steep streets and over the many bumps in the road.
But in the 1940s/1950s, the city planned to get rid of them. The people who lived there didn’t like this idea at all and so decided to fight against it. They collected and signed petitions and all kinds of other things to try and persaude the city and the government to keep the trams in the city. They were by then such an iconic sign of San Francisco and are very much a part of the city today so imagine how things would look if the people had not been proud of them and their city!
They might be more of a tourist activity now but they are still the best way to travel around the city for the locals too!
