2000s: This is an interesting take on the detective story and the Cuban setting really comes into its own.

In beautiful, crumbling Old Havana, Canadian detective Mike Ellis works both to save his marriage as well as looking for the killer of a small Cuban boy who he saw recently begging for money on the streets
Inspector Ricardo Ramirez, head of the Major Crimes Unit of the Cuban National Revolutionary Police, has to find the suspect – but this is not the problem – Cuban law is. He has only seventy-two hours to prevent a vicious killer from leaving the island.
But Ramirez has his own troubles – a dementia that makes him see the ghosts of victims of unsolved murders. He must try to solve the case without being haunted by his own ghosts.
With details such as the US embargo on Cuba and the communist rule of Castro making everything that much more complicated, the thrills and the stakes are higher than normal..
There is a great evocative setting to the book and being set mainly in old Havana, the setting lends itself very well indeed to the overall mystery and work of the detective.
Castillo del Morro – picturesque fortress guarding the entrance to Havana bay. La Cabaña fortress in Havana Bay for example is the most impressive fortress of the Spanish colony. San Salvador de la Punta Fortress, opposite to Castle of El Morro, at the start of El Malecon, is worth a visit as is another reminder of the city’s military past.
In addition, it’s interesting to read of Santería- a religion that grew out of the slave trade in Cuba and is investigated in the book as being something the detectives want to look into further
