Red Fox Tower Dongbianmen and the case of Pamela Werner

The Fox Tower in Beijing – now the Red Gate Gallery – The eastern section of Old Peking has been dominated since the fifteenth century by a looming watchtower, built as part of the Tartar Wall to protect the city from invaders. Known as the Fox Tower it was believed to be haunted by fox spirits , a superstition that meant the place was deserted at night.

The story in the novel follows the true life story of the murder of 19-year-old Pamela Werner  who was found at the base of this tower, horrifically murdered and dismembered in 1937. She was the daughter of sinologist ETC Werner. Detectives tried desperately to solve her murder before Japanese forces rolled into Beijing, but once war took over, the investigation took a back seat.

Midnight in Peking, which retraces Pamela’s steps in the days and minutes leading up to her death, the story takes you on a morbid path back into the past
