It’s 1946 and the dust of war has settled over Europe. But for Edith Graham, an ordinary woman living an ordinary life, her journey is only just beginning…
Daughter
Sister
Friend
Spy
Escaping her humdrum existence, Edith is swept into war-torn Germany and recruited to draw elusive Nazis out of hiding.
But the closer she gets to the truth, the more blurred the line between good and evil. In a shadowy world of shifting loyalties, where no-one is quite who they seem to be, who can Edith trust?
The novel takes us from Switzerland and London via Germany and Italy. The central setting is Britain’s Control Commission for Germany, an entity that sends British citizens to Germany to help rebuild the country. People recruited there also help to track down and prosecute war criminals.
Post-war Germany comes to life, with all its trauma and destruction. There’s an underground Nazi movement that hopes to re-emerge one day. More scary still is the discovery of the true horror of the Nazi experiments on humans. We flit from Germany and then to Italy to showcase how women especially had their lifes transformed in an attempt to help their country.
